WHAT GODMILOW TAUGHT is a film conversation in which Mireia Sallarès captures Jill Godmilow’s commitment to a political life. Sallarès’s film engages with an artistic practice in which having an idea entails a responsibility, and in which grappling with a political problem requires collaborating with others to make useful films.
For her epic exploration of the female orgasm, Catalan artist Mireia Sallares interviewed 30 Mexican women from various walks of life: professors, prostitutes, psychologists, nuns, revolutionaries, and former child brides. Her interviews go beyond the “little deaths” of the title, seamlessly moving between issues of sexual violence, political protest, love, family, and mortality. In a culture where sexual taboos run deep, what the women of Little Deaths have in common is a belief in liberation and self-discovery through sexuality, and a remarkable courage in the face of tragedy and oppression.
Halfway between documentary, speculative fiction and experimental cinema, POTENTIAL HISTORY starts from the fact that there is a past that is not reflected in official histories. A critical reading of archives is thus required to tell the stories that are not documented. The film appropriates a concept developed by Ariella Aïsha Azoulay to narrate the ‘potential history’ of Francesc Tosquelles, a Catalan psychiatrist and refugee from the Spanish civil war who ran a provincial hospital in France during the Nazi occupation. Revolutionary politics from the 1930s opened the way to revolutionizing therapy.
