A saga about the life of the Siberian Savelyev family during the period 1902 through the 1960s as they survive through three wars, a revolution, and Soviet government approval.

A few days after the unconditional surrender of German troops, a group of Soviet soldiers is billeted at a farmyard which the war somehow never seems to have reached. This apparently peaceful picture is eerily undermined when the Red Army soldiers are confronted with the full extent of Nazi terror.

The film is dedicated to Sergei Pavlovich Korolev, whose name is associated with the first stage of space exploration.

Petr Konstantinovich is the powerful Director of Petrochemical Industry, which is being built from scratch in a small Siberian town.

Varvara and Pavel Zhdanov did not live long together. The war broke out and Pavel went to the front, and a hard, exhausting job at a metallurgical plant fell on the shoulders of a young woman...

As a seven-year-old boy, he once visited his uncle for the first time and was captivated by the beauty of the taiga. Years later, becoming a biology student, the hero comes to these places and receives the first lessons of morality in communicating with the natural world... Having once witnessed a barbaric hunt, when dozens of birds were exterminated before his eyes for the sake of boredom, the hero vowed never to pick up a gun again and became a passionate defender of all living things on earth.
