SOKO Kitzbühel is an Austrian television series produced by ORF and ZDF. It is a spin-off of the German crime series SOKO 5113. It is set in the renowned Tyrolean tourist centre of Kitzbühel. The production company "beo-Film" has produced the show since 2001. The German abbreviation SOKO stands for Sonderkommission, "special commission", a task force with specific duties.

Through the eyes of psychologist Thomas Meiberger, we examine the mental, social and psychological factors of how and why criminal acts are committed. Even in cases that seem unsolvable, Meiberger is able to follow a thread back to the suspect by interpreting the sequence of events, the victim's behavior and subtle details that are invisible to others.

The film is set in the near future, in a world of perfect capitalism. Society is sustained by a class of top achievers; meanwhile, so-called minimum recipients live under sedation in Fortresses of Sleep. The great majority of top achievers view themselves as happy. An outsourced agency has been established for the rest: Life Guidance is charged with turning these individuals into optimal people as well. Alexander has internalized the system but one wrong word to his child triggers Life Guidance. He starts to rebel and encounters the horror of the system in all its brightness and affability.

A brutal-looking man drives through Vienna in a pick-up – with human cargo on the locked loading area. His victim, bound and gagged, is Karl Burger.
