An expansive Russian drama, this film focuses on the life of revered religious icon painter Andrei Rublev. Some of them have understood that they can't live outside Russia and go back maybe to be happy, maybe not, some go back to face sure death for their crimes, some don't go back and know that are going to miss homeland forever, some are comfortably well off (are they?) in exile. Sentimental without syrup, tragic and comical at the same time.

The stationmaster of a railway station situated in the steppes of Kazakhstan discovers a rubber-bearing plant. Soon, an expeditionary team arrives, led by Professor Shakhron, who will persistently argue—by hook or by crook—that there are no rubber-bearing plants in these steppes, all the while plotting a trip abroad. In ultimately exposing the professor, the team forces him to admit to concealing the results of their work.

The film takes place during the pre-revolutionary years and the initial period of the Soviet regime. During the assassination attempt, the police arrest a girl terrorist, but the general is killed by the bullet of another revolutionary.
