A woman, with the aid of her police officer sweetheart, endeavors to uncover the prostitution ring that has kidnapped her sister, and the philanthropist who secretly runs it.
Katy Standish is a family drudge on a New England farm. Her elder sister "enjoys" poor health and her mother sees to it that Katy not only does her own work but that of the weak or lazy elder, Priscilla. Oliver Putnam, a husky young farmer lad, comes a-courting of Katy, but her parents interfere so much that he is discouraged.
Young teacher Nan Cartwright leaves Virginia for a narrow-minded Western town. Facing constant harassment from townspeople, her reputation is ultimately ruined after a carriage accident forces her to spend the night in the woods.
