Biography
Adriana Barbosa is a Mexican-Brazilian filmmaker based in São Paulo, Brazil. She is part of the Film Collective Cinefusão since 2009. In 2018 she co-directs along with Thiago Zanato the short film La Flaca. Also in 2018 she premieres her first documentary feature Madrigal for a Living Poet at the Official Competition of 21th Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes and she continues her research on a documentary about the regional Mexican traditions about the death.

Bite
The Bony Lady (La Flaca) is a film about Arely Vazquez, a transgender woman and leader of the Santa Muerte (Saint Death) Cult in Queens, New York. During her yearly celebration to the Bony Lady (‘La Flaca’ as she likes to call her), Arely faces a lot of challenges to fulfill a promise she made ten years ago.
The Bony Lady
Two friends respond to the challenges of the present by connecting through a playful provocation. Separated by America’s hemispheres, one in Brazil and the other in the U.S, they communicate strictly through video letters during a year. As a rule, each letter is formally and thematically inspired by a woman experimental filmmaker. As life unfolds, they express on film what they want to share with each other: the experience of being a recent immigrant, the expectations of political elections in both countries, their fears and hopes, all while observing the different women around them.

In a period of isolation, far away from each other, 2 friends reconnect through video-letters, inspired by the poetic gaze of women experimental filmmakers: Marie Menken, Joyce Wieland, Gunvor Nelson, Yvonne Rainer. Fernanda is a Brazilian living in São Paulo, Adriana is a Mexican-Brazilian living in Los Angeles. They both share their inspiration while capturing the reality of these times.

Filmic reverie about the reflections that the character brings, is a film about memory, which brings to light not only the agonizing paths of remembering, but also its political, resistance force, which insists on reinventing everyday life and searching for lost meanings.

In the dead of night, their grandmother weaves an ancient tale of the Xtbay-a spirit born of grief and longing-to help them confront their fears and hold onto hope as their father is lost in the storm.
