This adventurous crime drama is set in exotic Latin America and chronicles a lawman's attempt to bust up the ring of Yankee gun-smugglers who have been supplying arms to war-torn Central America. To stop them, the American agent must masquerade as a smuggler and join the gang. Meanwhile a young revolutionary is captivated by the brave words of her leader and pretends to be a singer while she looks for smugglers to sell her the weapons her group so badly needs. The agent is doing well until the smuggler he impersonates shows up and blows his cover. Fortunately, the authorities arrive before the agent is killed.

On the way he meets Rose Fargo and rescues her from the unwanted advances of a gambler, "Blackjack". When Chad and Rose arrive they find that Jubal and his partner, Shawnee, are really rustlers and outlaws. Jubal tries to get Chad to join them but he refuses, and leaves to set up his own homestead with Rose at his side. Later, the repentant Jubal comes to join him. Shawnee, angry at what he considers a double-cross, attacks the brothers with his gang.

In 1957, director Harold Daniels was hired by producer Michael A. Ripps to oversee BAYOU, a cheaply made, overly melodramatic tale of swamp life. The low budget film starred a pre-MISSION IMPOSSIBLE Peter Graves, Corman regular Jonathan Haze, and the effortlessly bizarre Timothy Carey. But despite this eclectic cast, BAYOU was a major flop at the box office. So Ripps recut the film, adding an off-camera rape scene and a new, bloody conclusion to its climatic fight. Of even greater importance was Ripp's new title: POOR WHITE TRASH.

This movie is of interest because of the presence of a young Steve McQueen, the leading man being John Drew Barrymore, father of the more famous Drew, and for being based on a novel by Harold Robbins, famous for steamy writing in his day.
