Sixteen-year-old apprentice Zuzka commutes to Prague, where she is studying to become a "mechanic and agricultural machinery adjuster." She lives alternately at a boarding school and at her parents' farm. At home, endless work awaits her, and at school, she is constantly ridiculed by her classmates. Only at night, in the girls' dormitory, under the covers, can she live out her dreams of love. She is secretly and platonically in love with actor and singer Jiří Pavel, about whom she knows everything. She keeps a scrapbook diary in which she records all of Pavel's acting and singing successes.
This bittersweet film was Roman Vávra's feature debut. The film consists of three independent stories, all connected through the motif of a field of grain. In 'Awn' a young couple takes a summer stroll in the country, in 'The Haystack' a gang of boys have an adventure with an older girl, and 'The Journey' recounts the tragicomic homecoming of a pair of aging newlyweds. For only the second time in the nineties Czech star Iva Janzurová appeared on the silver screen.
A costume, slightly erotic, love fable with grotesque elements and a distinct black humor accent. Historicizing, Rococo decadence, visual stylization resonates with the wit, causticity, surprise and refined titillation of the theme. At the beginning of the story, the commentary says: "We know almost everything about the suffering of the working people before the French Revolution, but not much is known about the debauched life of the nobility. It is therefore high time to explore this less attractive topic in more detail." With wry humor, author and director Jaroslav Pozzi weaves together several stories describing the juicy sexual games of the rotten French nobility...
Michal unexpectedly remains alone with Zita after a forest cabin celebration and, following a passionate night together, must rush back to town through a series of unexpected obstacles. As they confront dramatic challenges and encounter a mysterious presence and a ghostly figure, they gradually uncover hidden connections between them, all building toward a surprising resolution.
