Tangletop, is the daughter of the town drunk with her tattered clothes and unkempt hair has been made a social outcast. As a result, she seems to be the perfect actress for the role that Emmett Dwight has developed in order to deceive his wealthy ward, Lowell Van Orden, who, during his blindness, fell in love with Mollie Dean. Since Emmett wants his daughter Madeline to marry Lowell, he tells his ward, after his eyesight has been restored, that Tangletop, who gladly goes along with the plan, is Mollie. As Emmett hoped, his ward's ardor starts to cool, but then, after Tangletop comes under the influence of the Reverend Clyde Harmon, she confesses everything to Lowell. John Burkett Ryder, "the richest man in the world," determines to discredit a judicial decision which works against the interest of his millions by discrediting its author, Judge Rossmore, and causes impeachment charges to be laid against him in Congress. The judge's daughter Shirley Rossmore, learns of his trouble and returns home from Paris, where she has won success as a writer. She is loved by Jefferson Ryder, son of the magnate who is slowly killing her father.
Bobby Austin is sent to Madrid on a diplomatic mission. He is followed by Lady Sylvia Hutton, a society adventuress who is infatuated with him. She takes him on a yachting trip to Monte Carlo where he meets Kathleen Lawrence, a notorious "kept" woman, who tries to save him from the ruin that Lady Sylvia bears in her wake.

Spending the night in a barn, she introduces herself to the thieves already there as the Oskaloosa Kid, a wanted criminal, and barely escapes their struggle to get her loot. Meanwhile, the real Oskaloosa Kid kills Reginald Paynter and throws Nettie Penning, whom Reginald was trying to seduce, onto the highway.
Dixon Grant, a reporter, is instructed to run down a band of high financiers suspected by the editor of being involved in a number of illegitimate deals. Masterman, the head of the crooked syndicate, effects an alliance with two others in putting over a traction deal. The signed agreement is blown out of the window and - falls into the hands of Grant. This fact is soon discovered by Masterman who offers to bribe the reporter and his sweetheart into surrendering the papers. They are tricked by Bray - and tortured until Grant discloses the hiding place of the papers. Masterman sets out to locate the papers. Meanwhile, Grant and his sweetheart escape and manage to secure the necessary evidence to publish the traction scandal. Masterman - has sought refuge in his house boat, which is caught in the strong current and its destruction follows.
