A married man with mother expected every day and especially forward to the arrival of the night to let off steam in a nightclub and escape from the daily drudgery family.

During the Spanish Civil War, a command takes the night to reach an advanced position, surrounded by the enemy, to protect the ford of a river. The next day, soldiers from both sides arrange a truce for fishing trouts and exchange cans and cigarettes. But foreign forces relieve the besiegers during the night and kill an unsuspecting soldier who was waving to return to fishing. While the position is strengthened, a soldier escapes to the nearby village to see his family.

In the Madrid of the fifties, during any day, whether by chance or fate, a series of characters live all kinds of stories, funny stories and some not so, in one of the most beautiful parks that exist in the city, the Retiro park, known as Parque de Madrid.

Mendoza, an officer in the Spanish Navy, sadly contemplates the cruiser "Cervera," scrapped after so many glorious years of service. He nostalgically recalls the ship's history, so closely linked to his own. There he met Mary, his fiancée, and when they both believed themselves to be the happiest people in the world, the outbreak of the Civil War abruptly separated them. Mary went to seek refuge with her family in the besieged Simancas barracks, which "the Cervera" was ordered to bombard when the enemy stormed it. Mendoza heard nothing more of his fiancée while the war continued. Antonio, the older brother, was assigned to the famous "bous" (cruisers) that carried out such important missions across the open sea, and the younger brother, Manuel, served as an officer on the cruiser "Baleares." Through each of their stories, we learn about the main actions of the battle for control of the sea.
