Al Bundy is an unsuccessful middle aged shoe salesman with a miserable life and an equally dysfunctional family. He hates his job, his wife is lazy, his son is dysfunctional (especially with women), and his daughter is dim-witted and promiscuous.

Barney Miller is the kind of cop we'd all like to run into. Always sensible, he maintains order over a band of detectives who gamble, hit on anything in skirts, go to renaissance philosophy conventions for fun, and would really prefer to be writing. Nearly all of the action takes place in the squad room where citizens and criminals are brought in to complicate the mix.

A not-so-happy family is divided further when the father gets a schizophrenic disorder. Jack Malloy is the hallucinating father who works at a used car lot. Jennifer "Jennie" Slattery Malloy is the mother who hates Ryan and Ross, her two sons. Ryan Malloy is the oldest son who is not too bright. Tiffany Malloy is the beautiful smart daughter. Ross Malloy is the youngest forgotten child. Mr. Floppy is Jack's stuffed rabbit who he sees come to life.

The friendship of a group of young friends struggling with teen sex, drugs, and work is jeopardized by a romantic interest which may turn pals into bitter rivals.

A babysitter realizes that one of the children she looks after is being physically abused by his mother.

A veteran street cop is assigned a new partner. The partner is not exactly what he seems to be, though--he is an experimental android who has been programmed by the police lab.
