What are the relationships between Californian New Age and Quebec practices? We take an overview of California and its major trends which influence currents of thought throughout the world, and more particularly in Quebec. The New Age is a convenient label that brings together proponents of "new" therapies and those of "workouts", meditators and computer radicals. It may be that Quebec is only the outpost of the conquests of a new civilization which sells us on the one hand its computer technology and on the other hand its philosophy as instructions.

Rêve aveugle

Set against a background of her paintings and the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, landscapes they depict, this short documentary is a portrait of the life and work of one of Canada's foremost primitive painters, Maud Lewis. Emerging from her youth crippled with arthritis, Lewis escaped into her painting at the age of 30. She had never seen a work of art and had never attended an art class but her paintings captured the simple strength, beauty and happiness of the world she saw - a world without shadows.
Maud Lewis: A World Without Shadows

The Unbroken Line
In the last thirty-five years, some of China's policies have given Chinese women a new lease on life. Whether they have become corporate executives or storekeepers or have remained peasants, most women are still torn between their modern aspirations and a persistent, traditional status. With the discreet guidance of Nancy Cheng, a Shanghai scriptwriter, we witness some of the contradictions inherent in this situation.
The Great Wall of Tradition
Some people call it an engineering triumph. The Cree and Inuit refer to it as cultural genocide. This is the controversy surrounding the James Bay hydroelectric project in Northern Quebec.
Riding the Great Whale

Ballad to Cornwallis

From the flat roof of his old house, a young Nova Scotian turns and takes a 360o look at life in Sambro, Nova Scotia, the small coastal village where he now lives.
Change by Degrees
A growing number of parents are concerned about the impersonal approach to childbirth seen in many hospitals. They find hospital procedures inflexible and more often geared to the needs of the institution than to those of child and parent. Members of the medical profession and parents discuss today's obstetric methods and alternatives to them. The film candidly records the birth of a baby and the interaction of mother and father.
