A small town is one day visited by a priest who is there on a secret mission. He is a member of the Inquisition sent to investigate the activities of a local miller. The miller and his son are the descendants of an old family whose ancestral home burned down a century ago, but was rebuilt from scratch. The miller inherited much of his knowledge about the land, water, and a building's stability from generations of family experience. His reputation for finding water and predicting when a structure might collapse have come to the attention of the Inquisition -surely he must be in league with the Devil.

But all that changed when Wallenstein's young nephew František Adam arrived at the chateau with his charming wife Valeria. She wanted to see the famous seducer with her own eyes. However, she was somewhat disappointed by the reality, as well as by the seducer's outdated views on love.

The family of Prague greengrocer Pavlas was among the first immigrants to settle in the border village of Severov. Together, the new residents manage to harvest their first harvest on time and successfully - but they will have to uncover a German saboteur posing as the manager of a sawmill...

A Czechoslovak battalion, led by Captain Hloušek, conquers a Slovak mountain village two days before Christmas Eve 1944. Christmas and classical music is heard from nearby German positions. The soldiers get permission from their commanders to celebrate Christmas. The only one against is the austere second lieutenant Jílek, about whose past there are various rumours and whom the soldiers distrust. Captain Hloušek decides to reconnoitre the enemy positions, which, despite a minor incident, goes off without a hitch. The holiday of peace and tranquility can begin both with ours and the enemy...
