During the Napoleonic occupation of the German states in 1812, a tailor by the name of Anton Wibbel is sentenced to sit in jail for insulting the Emperor. The tailor manages to get out of this by paying off a friend to go to prison in his place. But then, the "phony" prisoner suddenly dies in his cell and everyone now thinks Wibbel is dead.

In New York, boxer Eddie Steele has a promising career ahead of him. But this makes him reckless, and he prefers nightclubs to training. Eventually, his reckless lifestyle becomes his downfall. After some reflection, he emigrates to Germany, opens a sports school in Berlin, and allows his favorite student to benefit from his own experience.

GDR and West Berlin in the 1950s. Hans Nettermann, a designer at the "Komet" bicycle factory, is a favorite of the BSG road riders. His dream is to one day ride in a stand-up race. A construction error throws him back in the road race. They work for a long time to fix it. Then he is persuaded to go to West Berlin to become a professional rider. Although he makes it to the top class, he also learns about the scams in professional sport. He marries Marianne, who has followed him and tries to persuade him to return to the GDR, which he eventually does. After some difficulties at work, he is nominated for the first amateur endurance race in the GDR and wins.

Three gangsters overpower a night watchman and try to break into a safe. Opening the door triggers an alarm and they flee through the window without any loot. Their boss at ZEG (Zentrale Einbruchs-Gesellschaft) m.b.H. is furious with them. Tommy points out an old method, and Ricky recommends the new "occupier way". They disguise themselves as American soldiers and take part in the charity bazaar of the Privy Councillor von Lambert. There they organize a parlour game in which all those present place their valuables on a table around which they march. Then the lights go out. To the horror of the guests, the three "occupiers" disappear with all their jewelry and money.

Old captain Barkhahn keeps on going bankrupt with all his business endeavors. He’s made for the sea and not for the land. His newest idea is a family-run bed and breakfast with “Familienanschluß," and so Captain Bräuer moves in and quickly shows interest in Barkhahn's daughter Käthe, whom he met and bugged earlier already. Meanwhile, the bailiff is on Barkhahn's back, and the next catastrophe is on the rise.

In 1955, Michael Vierkant, a Jew who had emigrated during the Nazi era, returns from abroad to the Federal Republic of Germany to obtain the conviction of Korn, the former informer responsible for the murder of his sister. Korn is back in office; Michael's efforts remain unsuccessful. There is a direct confrontation between the two, and Michael shoots Korn in self-defense. He flees and is hidden by the young, reclusive artist Marie Jäger, but is then caught by the police and charged with premeditated murder. The case is taken out of the hands of the criminal investigation department by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which constructs an act of political revenge on behalf of the communists. Michael manages to escape from prison. Marie and her friends organize a press conference at which Michael reveals the connections. The trial is postponed.

Young Beatrice has trained as a dancer against her father's wishes. At the circus, she meets the famous tamer Ruda and falls in love with him. But the next day, Ruda disappears with the circus. Beatrice gets a new engagement with another circus and makes a career as a dancer among live tigers.
