The story of a Czech national revivalist, writer and author of a famous cookbook... The story takes us to Litomyšl in 1836. The local bourgeois society, which does not fail to interject a German word into their conversation as proof of good upbringing and better origin, slanders Mrs. Rettigová. "Rettička" not only fights for standard Czech, is a patriot, but also attracts young girls and students to her and lends them Czech books. She simply disrupts the good old order. Another sensation in the town is caused by the announcement of a planned wedding. Maiden Lenka will marry old doctor Plavec. When Mrs. Rettigová finds out about it, she invites both fiancés to her, each separately. The main character of this ironic, intimate story about unrequited love is an older man, Adolf, who tells the story of his greatest failure in love. He has fallen in love with a young opera student, Janička, who, however, only has eyes for men who have a good position in artistic circles. Adolf hatches an ill-fated prank to introduce the girl to his friend Apostolko, a Greek worker. He passes him off as an opera conductor, and Janička falls in love with him. Adolf thus becomes the driving force behind events that ultimately turn against him.
The opening image that begins the suspenseful story is marked by a tragic event: an eight-year-old girl is brutally murdered in the forest and the dog that accompanied her is shot. The crime sets in motion an extensive search operation. Time is running out for the murderer, and the detectives have many years of experience and knowledge of local conditions on their side. According to the law of a good detective story, the circle of possible perpetrators is wide. Everyone from the neighborhood of little Stán is a suspect, because the results of the investigation showed that the girl knew her murderer...
A television adaptation of the successful 1961 Semafor Theatre performance of the same name. The Zuzana who listens to songs from a tape recorder and meditates on them is Zuzana Stivínová. The songs by Jiří Suchý and Jiří Šlitr, which were performed by the theatre stars of the time, became hits and are still sung today.
