An Italian engineer who had made a strategically important invention to ward off enemy aircraft is killed in a robbery. As the plans have presumably fallen into the hands of spies, secret service captain Bergall is given the task of recovering the papers. Bergall initially adopts a false name and appears as Mr. Gran, whom nobody knows. Under this name, he rents a room in the Hotel Danieli in Venice and makes the acquaintance of the shipowner's daughter Viola Dolleen. With her help, he is able to eliminate Captain Gordon, who is also interested in the plans. When Gran learns that the plans are now in the possession of the art dealer Tschernikoff, who wants to sell them to Gordon, he immediately travels to Rome, visits the art dealer Titian and pretends to be Gordon. The death of the Prime Minister causes a stir in the society of a small ducal residence. While Lord Chamberlain von Gillzing hopes to become the deceased's successor, Weber, his former secretary, is relegated to a minor post as archivist. Baroness von Windegg, previously known as the Prime Minister's mistress, also fears losing her social standing. But when the Baroness hands the archivist a thick package, which Gillzing believes contains the late Prime Minister's diaries, both she and the archivist suddenly find themselves in high demand, and everyone in town fears being mentioned in the diary in some compromising way.
Fritz Schmitz advertises the sea journeys of Mr. Hein Kluge using this melody. Fritz is Mr. Winkler's nephew and aside from attracting participants in these sea journeys, he's trying to get his uncle to invest 10,000 Reichsmark in Mr. Kluge's operation. And indeed, Mr. Winkler promises to make the investment, if the sea journey proves to be what he's expecting. He's hoping, by the way, to get to know "Emma", with whom he's been corresponding for quite a while now, because she put an ad out saying she wants a husband. And wouldn't you know it: without having met her except by mail, he's fallen for her! Another big condition is that Fritz not sell Mrs. Muller a ticket for this trip. On the steps, Fritz gets to know a young girl, with whom he falls in love at first sight and, without knowing her name, invites her to join the tour. And wouldn't you know it: this woman is Frau Muller's daughter. Can you guess where this is going?
