While conducting a crackdown on contraband cigarettes at Ueno Station, inspector Tetsuro Shibuya came across an envelope addressed to Misa Makihara inside an unattended backpack filled with loose tobacco. Misa was ostensibly an employee of Yamagishi Shokai, a real estate firm, but in reality she was the mistress of Yuzo Yamagishi, a cigarette bootlegger. Yamagishi’s contraband cigarettes were made from loose tobacco sourced from Misa’s uncle, Kisaku, in Ibaraki.

A little girl who falls into a lake and is saved by a god who then takes her up to the clouds and shows her what the world was like before she was born and what the world would be like if she where never born. While in the clouds she meets her grandparents and a few other people she loved who have passed on.
On the night before her wedding to her fiancé, Nakagawa, Kyoko Kagawa is spending time with her high school teacher and close friends. The classmates who have gathered at Ms. Shimizu’s house were all beautiful, kind women who are genuinely happy for Kyoko. However, one person, Shigeko Yuri, can't bring herself to be happy for her. Before the war, Kyoko had a boyfriend named Takei, who lost his life in the war. It was Nakagawa who comforted Kyoko and nurtured their relationship, but Shigeko herself had a lover named Haruoka, whose whereaboutsare still unknown. Shigeko, who has devoted everything to her love for Haruoka, misunderstood that Kyoko switched her affections to Nakagawa, and in an attempt to thwart Kyoko’s marriage hid the diamond ring Nakagawa has sent her.
