The film is about the life of Dmitry Cantemir and the Moldovan people from November 1710 to July 1711. Turkish troops are preparing for war with Russia. The Sultan entrusted him with the throne of Moldavia. Cantemir secretly established ties with Peter I and concluded a military-political agreement with him, according to which Russia took Moldova under its protectorate, pledged to help expel the Turks and restore the former borders of the Moldovan state.

Leader of a traveling gypsy band from the steppes of Bessarabia (now Moldova), Toma Alistar is a skilled violinist whose fame takes him on tours around European capitals and royal courts. He remains obsessed with his first love, beautiful Leanca who was married elsewhere while Toma was traveling, and spends his life and fortune trying to find her.

Katya, the heroine of the film, was helped in a dream by a noble stranger. When she arrives at school in the morning, she meets a newcomer and decides that he is the hero of her dream. However, the young man's actions destroy the romantic image created by Katya.
