Traffic on the B61 road, which connects Rotterdam to Warsaw and cuts through the German spa town of Bad Oeynhausen, is permanently gridlocked. The promised cure is a bypass whose construction is documented for a period of eight years: the efforts of the mayor, police, fire brigade and construction companies, the delays in the construction of the northern bypass and above all the reactions of the affected residents.

Between parental love, youth welfare offices and bureaucracy, three educators try their hardest to create a temporary home for children. This is not always easy, as the most diverse personalities and their stories clash here. And yet the residential group becomes a kind of surrogate family for the children. At the back of their minds, however, is always the question: for how long?

In Havana, transsexuals Odette, Juani and Malú wait for genital surgery - performed by European top surgeons and organized by the president's daughter, Mariela Castro. Castro is leading a sexual revolution combined with classic state socialism. New possibilities face old problems: will Cuban trans people find happiness despite intolerance, poverty and prostitution?

The film follows three young offenders from the day they are released from Wriezen prison, in eastern Germany, for a period of three years. Their new life begins at the train station where they all set out hoping for the same things: a job, somewhere to live, a girlfriend, security, respect and love. Will they make it?
