Deprived of her mother's attention and love throughout her life, Seniha grows up with a deep sense of jealousy towards her older brother, Halit. For her beauty-obsessed mother, Seniha is the ugly duckling, completely unfit for her noble and wealthy family. Her older brother, Halit, is the opposite. He is her mother's pride in every sense. Halit attends the best schools and takes advantage of the family's resources. He becomes both the country's most successful lawyer and its most promiscuous bachelor. The young and beautiful Muazzez loses the last member of her family, her dad, Hüsnü. On his deathbed he asks Ahmet, who he broke off contact with many years ago, to take care of his daughter Muazzez, who will be left all alone when he dies.

Şefik, a successful soldier, is one of the leading figures of the Committee of Union and Progress. When Abdulhamid II declares a constitutional monarchy, Şefik and his friends go to Istanbul. They plan to closely monitor the events unfolding there. However, it is here that Şefik will part ways with the society.

Seniha lives with her brother Halit and his wife Mükerrem. When Nüzhet, the handsome son of the richest family in town, sets his eyes on the married Mükerrem, she is at first disgusted with Nüzhet’s overt sexual innuendo. However, it isn’t long before Mükerrem yields to her lust and thus they embark on an affair. When Seniha finally reveals her sister-in-law’s un-virtuousness to her brother, Seniha has no idea what the consequences will be and how cruelly her destiny will change.
