A train dispatcher encounters a mute stranger who appears out of nowhere, and finds himself mysteriously involved with a murder in Poland. The end of the eighties in the twentieth century. Alois Nebel works as a dis­patcher at the small railway station in Bílý Potok, a remote village on the Czech–Polish border. He's a loner, who prefers old timetables to people, and he finds the loneliness of the station tranquil – except when the fog rolls in. Then he hallucinates, sees trains from the last hundred years pass through the station. They bring ghosts and shadows from the dark past of Central Eu­rope. Alois can’t get rid of these nightmares and eventually ends up in sanatorium. In the sanatorium, he gets to know The Mute, a man carrying an old photograph who was arrested by the police after crossing the border. No one knows why he came to Bílý Potok or who he’s looking for, but it is his past that propels Alois on his journey…

Milan Rastislav Štefánik was the first Slovak to circumnavigate the world, to climb Mont Blanc, to survive the shooting down of his ice-plane during World War I. He was an intellectual, scientist, inventor, astronomer, national hero, but also a lover of women and a bon vivant. 100 years ago, everyone considered his dreams a utopia, but he was not afraid to step into the unknown and realise his dream of liberating his own nation. His life story seems almost unbelievable, considering that he did it all as a single man in failing health, from the poorest of circumstances.

Marian Kuffa, a charismatic parish priest and a man of action, with his 'children', former convicts, the homeless, and drug addicts, has embarked on his most difficult mission. He has decided to help the poorest Roma to survive the cold and biting frost in their modest, hastily built dwellings in Roma slums in eastern Slovakia. Together with him, we get acquainted with the Roma ethnic group from a completely different angle.

He waged a heroic struggle for the national character of artistic expression, but in the struggle for his love he failed miserably... Who was Josef Mánes (1820–1871) and are we supposed to imagine him in Slavic slang as a combative Czech who, with the dogged expression of an uncompromising revivalist, clutches his war tools - a palette with colors and a brush? This is how the traditional nationalist iconography of the 19th and 20th centuries would like to see him, but other images come closer to the truth. For example, the one in which we see Mánes as a neglected and downtrodden person who madly spews out a torso of incomprehensible sentences. What was the inner world of this genius artist, who bought moments of happy creation very dearly in a struggle with various demons and with himself?

Protagonists and new context of the insurrectionary drama in the critical interpretation of contemporary Slovak and Czech historians. In postwar Czechoslovakia, the image of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) was subordinated to the ideological needs of the Communist Party and the objective interpretation only allowed the free conditions after 1989. While in the Czech countries this event disappears from general awareness, for Slovaks, it remains a key aspect of modern history. The current interpretation describes the insurrection not only as a Slovak struggle with fascism and German Nazism, but also as a duel about the form of the next Czech-Slovak relations.
