Biography
Nicole Midori Woodford is a Singaporean film director, writer and editor. She is an alumna of Berlinale Talents, Asian Film Academy, Torino Film Lab and Talents Tokyo. She has written, directed and edited several short films such as Permanent Resident (2017), which has been selected in many festivals including Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival; Tenebrae (2018), which was produced with Astro Malaysia in conjunction with producer Fran Borgia as part of an Astro Omnibus focusing on upcoming Southeast Asian directors; Waiting Room (2018), part of the 15 Shorts initiative; and For We Are Strangers (2015), which was in competition at Busan and Singapore International Film Festivals. Nicole has also been directing notable commercial and narrative works for Zhao Wei Films including Ordinary (2015), a short film for the 28th SEA Games. Her debut feature film project, You Are There, was selected in the first edition of SEAFIC lab (Southeast Asian Fiction Lab), where it won the Open SEA Fund award and the SEAFIC-TFL award; and has participated in SEA Lab at the Singapore International Film Festival and Talents Tokyo. The project was also selected at the FeatureLab programme at Torino Film Lab in 2018 and won the Co-Production Award by the jury headed by Toronto International Film Festival’s Artistic Director Cameron Bailey. In addition to filmmaking, Nicole is a film lecturer at the School of Art, Design & Media at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

A middle-aged woman, her son and mother reside in a flat near a quarry bearing the name of Little Guilin, modelled after a famous landmark in China. She pretends that she is a prospective buyer who arranges to view several condominiums, claiming a token or borrowing a moment from each family that resides in them. Glimpsing the man-made quarry through different windows, her obsession culminates when she finally decides to take an excursion of sorts to visit it.
Permanent Resident
For We Are Strangers reveals the consciousness of a prison counsellor, Xuan, who slowly succumbs to the trauma of her past after being assigned to the same man who assaulted her. The inmate is due to be released for a minor felony but fails to recognise her. Xuan's subsequent actions blur the line between victim and assailant, altering the viewer's perception of morality and retribution.
For We Are Strangers

On the last day for the residents to vacate a high-rise apartment before its demolishment, a young girl, Iris, and her mother are moving out. On a tight deadline, her boyfriend and his friend are also present to help. Iris inevitably gets distracted exploring the vacant spaces of her neighbours, relishing the moment. As they pull away in the rental truck for the last time, Iris sits in the back with her boyfriend, surrounded by her furniture. She allows a small ray of light to penetrate the darkness of the truck. The images of the outside world appear on the interior of the truck; they watch the inverted building before it eventually disappears forever.
