Octave Verbrugge, a powerful Belgian building contractor, met Hugo Saint-Laurent, a brilliant French engineer, during a business trip and made friends with him. Now that his bureau of expertise is experiencing difficulties with one of their important projects he has the idea to hire his friend to help resolve the problem. Hugo agrees and stays as a guest at Octave's home in Ghent, where the promoter lives with his two unmarried sisters, Françoise, a beautiful but mysterious woman, and Aurélie, a very strict and withdrawn lady.

However impressive the site is, however bossy the guides are, the visitors of the Musée Napoléon listen only absent-mindedly. Does this young lady really care about the tragic destiny of emperor Napoleon or Europe's changing face or isn't she more interested in her won reflection in a window case? And isn't the camera operator more prone to film the cornet wimples of visiting nuns than the fossilized remains of Napoleon's fallen grandeur...?

The film follows the spirited press photographer Jo Markus (played by Denise De Weerdt), who works for an Antwerp weekly magazine. Degelin takes a step further here and delivers a musical tale that could qualify as 'filmed music' or 'a musical picture'. Taking its inspiration from James Joyce's Ulysses the film creates a dream- and desert-like seaside world of shipwreck and long-haired mermaids. These seven minutes of pure experimentation were awarded the silver bear at Berlin Festival in 1961.

The widow Fien Appel, owner of a pastry shop, lives next door to café owner Camille, a widower. Camille is eager to win Fien’s hand, but she is first and foremost concerned with the future of her daughters. Her devoted servant Julleke, who cares deeply for the girls, worries that Camille won’t be able to persuade his mistress and advises him to seek a suitable wife through a marriage broker. A rendezvous is arranged at the bar “In het Paradijs,” setting the stage for unexpected twists and comedic developments.

Paul and his wife, Maria, run a pig farm. When Maria's sister, Helena, moves in, Paul falls deeply in love with her, only to be rejected. Seeking an escape from the tension, Helena confides in her sister before leaving the farm to live with a friend. Soon after, a devastating outbreak of swine fever hits the farm, pushing the business to the brink of ruin, yet unexpectedly drawing Paul and Maria closer together. However, when Helena returns, Paul renews his advances—and this time, she gives in. As Maria is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and ultimately passes away, Paul is left with a devastating realization: despite having Helena by his side, profound loneliness will consume the rest of his days.
