The story is based on Konstantine Gamsakhurdia's novel and depicts the social and political changes taking place in Soviet Georgia in the 1930s through the line of the main characters: Tarash Emkhvari and Arzakan Zvambaya.

The film delves into the moral dilemmas of human relationships. An old sailor, the sole survivor of a ship that sank during the war, grapples with the weight of a moral compromise made many years ago. As he reflects on his past, he recalls his carefree life, filled with mistakes, and the crime he committed against the captain of the lost ship.

Ketevan, a village doctor, is already sending her second son away in the world war. Only the youngest child, Mamuka, remains as the family's hope. Ketevan does not lack care for the sick, lives in hope, and waits for his children to return home. But the harsh reality of the war demands a sacrifice from her again - Ketevani sends his third son to the war as well.
