To prevent David's widowed mother, Elizabeth, from being influenced by her son against their fake tropical rubber plantation investment, the promoters trick David into managing the plantation in Mexico. Seeking to prove his worth after a failed marriage proposal, David travels to the tropics. There, he encounters the brutal reality of the rubber slavery system. He meets Ludwig Hertzer (the villainous "Planter," played by Tyrone Power Sr.), a feared and hated man who runs a slave-labor-based operation. David also encounters Senora Morales and her daughter, Consuela, who are involved in the slave trade. David discovers his family's investment is actually a "rubbish heap." He attempts to warn his mother via cable, but the message is intercepted by Hertzer for his own gain.

Poverty-stricken John Hargrave is forced to beg employment from rich mill owner Roger Winton in order to save his sick mother's life. Hargrave and Winton's son, Roger Jr., are also rivals for the same woman, Irene Foster, who desires Winton's love but Hargrave's money. Winton, Sr., in an attempted takeover of Hargrave's stock, bribes labor agitators to create turmoil in Hargrave's plant. Hargrave discovers the plot, foils the scheme and discovers Irene's disloyalty. Although stricken with blindness because of the agitation in his life, Hargrave finds true love with his secretary, Margaret Carlisle. Once his sight is restored, he marries Margaret.
During a raging Montana snowstorm, Doctor Jim Barnes collapses at Esther Anderson's cabin door. Esther offers Jim refuge, but when he discovers that their food supplies are running dangerously low, he braves the journey into town in order to replenish them. On the way, he is overcome with exhaustion and fails to return. Esther, unaware of Jim's condition and abused by her stepfather, joins a theatrical troop and leaves home.

Silk Stocking Sal is discovered burgling a palatial townhouse by its owner, Bob Cooper. Intrigued with her poise and daring, he offers to find her an honest job. She accepts his proposition and is hired by Cooper's importing firm to show antiques to prospective buyers. When Abner Bingham, Bob's partner, is found murdered after an argument with Bob, he is accused of the crime on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to die. To save Bob from the chair, Sal, who suspects Bull Reagen, a mobster, of the murder, goes to his apartment. She plants a microphone in the closet, gets Bull drunk, and, by accusing him of not having the killer instinct, taunts him into boasting of having killed Bingham. The conversation is overheard by the district attorney, who narrowly saves Bob from electrocution and then arrests Bull and his gang. Bob and Silk Stocking Sal are soon married.

Both of them wind up serving in the Army and going to the Philippines -- George as an officer and West Point graduate, and Herbert as a lowly enlisted man who soon deserts to becomes the drunken love slave of a native girl.
