On November 11, 1918, the last day of the First World War , Lieutenant Colonel Klaus Olden desperately tried to hold a lost post with his unit. The rescue appears in the form of pilot Jochen Wendler, who shows up with his plane and drops ammunition. When Jochen's machine is shot down immediately, Klaus manages to pull him out of the wreck at the last second. Both are injured and taken to the hospital , where they are cared for by the attractive nurse Barbara, a childhood friend of Jochen. The two men form a blood brotherhood and drive together with Barbara to East Prussia , where they want to visit relatives of Jochen on their estate . But the relatives' yard was destroyed in the war. The post-war period turns out to be an economic disaster.

In the beginning, it served as transport for a princely family; then became the headquarters car for the military high command; and then, most adventurous of all, it ended up with a circus. Converted to a bar, it finally had its day and was supposed to serve as a placard carrier. Luckily, the museum saved it from this sad fate.

Since all his personal documents were in it, he not only looses his money but also his identity. The thief turns out to be a cunning con man, who uses the papers for his criminal schemes. Once war became imminent, Joseph Goebbels instructed the German film industry to initiate production of numerous militaristic projects, but DIII88 was initiated by the Propaganda Minister's rival, Goring, who commissioned several aviation pictures. DIII88 is not a war picture per se, because it takes place in peacetime, but the young, fresh-faced air aces enthusiastically look forward to the coming war. The propaganda is blatant: The only thing that matters is dedication to duty and unconditional commitment to the Fatherland.

As he only signs an "M" on his work, Monika has no difficulty in claiming she is "M", but problems arrive when she is commissioned to do a large mural and Maler refuses to help her out. However, his creative spirit gets the best of him and he does the mural which is widely acclaimed to be a great work of art. Felder , an art dealer, is not overly pleased with this turn of events as he has been pleading with Monika to divorce her shiftless husband and marry him.
