On the afternoon of July 1, 1981, Los Angeles police responded to a distress call on Wonderland Avenue and discovered a grisly quadruple homicide. The police investigation that followed uncovered two versions of the events leading up to the brutal murders - both involving legendary porn actor John Holmes.

A pair of detectives are assigned to investigate a murder, and discover a trail of corruption and criminal activity that leads right back to their own police department.

With his life already in shambles — his girlfriend just dumped him, he's lost his acting gig, and his cat is seriously ill — sad-sack Jimmy Zoole (Steve Guttenberg) comes home New Year's Eve to find a gay burglar (Lombardo Boyar) looting his apartment. Taking the intruder hostage, Jimmy threatens to unleash his pent-up rage on the would-be thief but instead begins to bond with his captive.
