The story follows a family of refugees from the early twentieth century through to the Civil War. Through movements, separations, and reunions, personal lives intersect with Greece’s major historical transformations. Space and time are in constant flux, while the characters remain trapped in an unending search for a homeland.

At the Presidential Mansion news arrives every day indicating that things in the country are going from bad to worse. The President summons all the political leaders in order to understand exactly what is happening; and yet no one can enlighten him. He decides to act. He calls two journalists and assigns them the task of investigating the matter by speaking directly with ordinary people. The investigation starts with the notorious Gypsy Tamtakos, who struggles every day for a living. Then they move on to a simple employee, Markos, who dreams of a raise -which never comes. Then it's a farmer, Thymios, who comes to the capital to sell his oranges. In a largely burlesque manner, the film more or less reveals that the entire misfortune is due to Greeks' laziness and apathy, as well as to the prevailing attitude of "no big deal".

In 1940, on the eve of the Greek-Italian war, in life of Colonel Diagoras Vartanis, his sister Christina and her husband Captain Hector Psachos appears a second Hector Psachos, which insists that this is true of the two. Christina is still in a dilemma while Vartanis lead the committee to interrogate and investigate which of the two men who claim to be the captain Psachos, is real and what is a spy.
Lalakis, a penniless guy, is obsessed with expensive imported clothing, and through various petty schemes he manages to satisfy his "shopping" addiction. When he gets fired from his job and is left penniless, an Italian woman, Livia, appears and suggests that they import cosmetics from Italy to Greece. Lalakis gladly accepts and goes to Rome to bring them back, but he gets mixed up with a gang of antiquities smugglers, who follow him to Greece. However, he manages to neutralize them and subsequently becomes wealthy from the imported cosmetics.
Sotiris owns a souvlaki restaurant but at his free time he loves to work as a P.I. in the neighborhood.

Stefanos is a musician who lives a quiet life. One day, however, when he leaves his son with his nanny at the supermarket to do some shopping, something happens that changes her life forever. At the same time that some people are trying to rob the cash delivery, Stefanos' son, accompanied by his nanny, exits the supermarket and is killed by a stray bullet fired by the robbers at the money transporters. The pain of the unfortunate father stifles every human emotion within him, and when the law loses track of the robbers and control of the situation, Stefanos discovers the robbers...
