Dr. Gautamdas (Rajinder Kumar) attains his qualifications in London, England, and with the blessings of Lord Bertrand Russell (himself), returns to his home country and his dad (Balraj Sahni). Much to the disappointment of his dad, Dr. Gautamdas decides to re-locate to Japan, which has been devastated by the explosion of atom bombs on two of it's cities - Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There he meets with other doctors, and is given a tour of the patients and their families, and other survivors (Om Prakash, Chand Usmani, Baby Kavita). {Graphic scenes of the atrocities inflicted on innocent people} On a chance meeting with the beautiful Meloda (Saira Banu) he knows that they are destined to be one, and so does she. Meloda's dad is also a doctor (Chetan Anand). Meloda had studied in India and speaks Hindi fluently. Both fall in love amongst the splendour of Japan.

The film is based on Nikitin’s travel notes. Starring in the film are popular Russian actor Oleg Strizhenov and India’s 1950s movie star Nargis.

Businessman Sonu Sharma belongs to a wealthy family and lives with his widowed mother. He suddenly becomes ill, is hospitalized and looked after by a young nurse, Heena, who he falls in love with. Thereafter, he asks Heena to resign from her job, re-locate to a small town where he has rented a house called "Madhu Villa", and he will join her soon. Upon arrival at Madhu Villa, Heena is met by Sonu's brother, Laalu, and their paternal uncle. Days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months and still Sonu has not arrived. Quite unknown to Heena, Sonu has no brothers nor even any uncles. The two masquerading are actually two escaped convicts, one of who is awaiting the death sentence, and there no guarantee that Sonu may ever return to live with her.

Meanwhile, Bharat's dad (Balraj Sahni) who is the Inspector General, does not approve of Bharat's rebellious nature and decides to arrest him on sight. Bharat's mom (Kamini Kaushal) is torn between the love for her husband and her son. Bharat determination against the Diwan is so strong that he decides to bomb-blast a railway train transporting the Diwan, knowingly that his own dad is also travelling on that train. Will Bharat break his mom's heart by killing his dad and the Diwan? Good acting scores by the entire caste make this movie worth watching. Lyrics by Indivar.
