Four girls and their manager aiming for stardom!

During the winter in Toyama in 1962, Tatsuo Mizushima is fretting about his feelings for his classmate Eiko Tsujisawa while agonizing about his upcoming high school examinations. When he was little, he and Eiko had heard that in April of a year when the winter has been very harsh, any couple finding fireflies together needs to get married. However, his family's situation does not allow Tatsuo to continue his worrying about such things for very much longer.

Kitamori Yuki was particular about her promise to her mother-in-law Hana. The promise is that, as the daughter-in-law of Koichi, the eldest son of the Kitamori family, Hana entrusts everything to Yuki, but wants her entire family to come see her on her birthday. At that time, her second son Keisuke's daughter Megumi, who is her private taxi driver, made a mistake, and she was overwhelmed and approached Yuki for advice. Eventually, her mother Kayo of Megumi learned about this, but a period was quietly struck by her women coming to a conclusion that should be the food for Megumi's growth.

At the end of October, Sueko Yamane, a widow living alone, is strangled to death in her home in the Togura district on the outskirts of Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. Money had been stolen, and it appeared to be a robbery and murder. Kaharu Ginsaku (Tomokazu Miura), head of the First Investigative Division at the Ehime Prefectural Police Headquarters, who was in charge of the investigation, did not anticipate that this case would turn out to be an unexpectedly difficult case. At the end of that year, in a forest overlooking the Genkai Sea in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Kazuo Shimosaka (Shiro Sano) puts his hands around the neck of his girlfriend, Nobuko Mano (Saki Takaoka), and strangles her to death.

Emiko Hayasaka (Seiko Matsuda), who lives in Hawaii, has arranged a marriage with Akira Kuniyoshi (Shinji Yamashita), the son of the president of a hotel chain. Although Emiko is not yet ready to get married, Akira and both of her parents are enthusiastic about the matchmaking. During a summer vacation in Japan, Emiko is attacked with a knife by a boy, but is saved by Shinji Terao (Kiichi Nakai), a young man who happens to be passing by. Shinji is passionate about windsurfing and trains hard every day for the world championships. Emiko is attracted to him because of his sincerity, though he is not very sociable. Upon returning to Hawaii, she overcame her parents' objections and got him to break off his proposal to Akira. Meanwhile, the world competition is approaching and Shinji comes to Hawaii from Japan.
