Late 1800s. The arrival of the railroad to an isolated town brings the long-awaited progress, but also Oleguer, a dark loan shark with shady dealings. When he seizes and stays at Cileta and her family's farmhouse, the young peasant will do anything possible to get her house back. Even if that means following in the dark footsteps of the money-lender.

Time seems to stand still in a village in the Galician coast. Everybody there is paralyzed although we can still hear their voices: they talk about ghosts, about witches, about monsters. Three women arrive in the village to find Rubio, a sailor who has recently disappeared in the sea.

Jesús, a middle-aged man, finds out that he suffers from a venereal disease. Feeling guilty, he abandons his pregnant wife and flees to the countryside. In Pozoamargo, a small village lost in the middle of nowhere, he works as a grape harvester, living a simple existence, until he meets Gloria, a peculiar young woman.

Marcelino's friend has just died. He must travel back to his homeland.
