Commissioned to mark the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, "To Each His Own Cinema" brought together 33 of the world's pre-eminent filmmakers to produce short pieces exploring the multifarious facets of cinema and their perspective on the state of their chosen artform in the early 21st century.

A hundred and fourteen famous Iranian theater and cinema actresses and a French star: mute spectators at a theatrical representation of Khosrow and Shirin, a Persian poem from the twelfth century, put on stage by Kiarostami. The development of the text -- long a favorite in Persia and the Middle East -- remains invisible to the viewer of the film, the whole story is told by the faces of the women watching the show.

The series is about two couples who are supposed to be neighbors in an apartment. Kamal (Firdous Kaviani) and Mahin (Mehraneh Mahintorabi) are one of the two older couples. Ali (Farhad Jam) and Maryam (Elham Pavehnejad) are two other couples who are younger than Kamal and Mahin. Later, it turns out that Kamal is Maryam's uncle, which Maryam did not know about... The story of the series "The Wives" is about the adventures and preoccupations of these two neighbors.

Inspired by Iranian folk tales and reputed as the first Iranian musical movie, the film follows the story of the lazybones congenitally bald Hassan who is tricked out of the house by his mother. Then he learns about Chelgis, a girl kidnapped and kept by an ogre in his enchanted garden. Smitten by her beauty, Hassan tries to find a way to save her. In a public bathroom, he encounters his doppelganger. The doppelganger promises to fulfill his wishes in return for a fraction of his life. But when fulfilled, his wishes do not emerge the same he envisioned…

Maryam Banoo helps them by inviting them to her house and entertaining them with several kinds of food and drinks. The husband and wife invite some other members of their family to Banoo's house and they start to steal Banoo's expensive furniture and bothering her with their bad behavior. Finally Maryam's husband comes back from the trip and throws the poor people out. He admits that he is sorry about his affair but Maryam doesn't accept it and moves to an unknown place to live in peace. Her husband goes after her.
