The series, located in Frankfurt am Main, features two main characters who solve crimes: a defense attorney and a private investigator. Josef Matula, a former German police officer, has gone into private business. His method of investigation is very effective and direct, and he sometimes even resorts to dirty tricks. Claus Theo Gärtner has portrayed the role since the start of the series.

When she discovers that her husband is cheating on her, a heartbroken woman spends the night with a Romanian asylum seeker. That same night, a murder takes place in the village, and suspicion falls on the Romanian.
Just under two weeks before the election, a party’s leading candidate is kidnapped, and a large ransom is demanded. When the party provides the money but the handover by its chairman fails, a sinister suspicion begins to take root among those involved. The kidnapped man’s wife takes the initiative and comes to some bitter realizations.
This film is based on the actual events referred to as the "MĂĽhlviertler Hasenjagd" (Hare-hunt in the MĂĽhlviertel) which occurred in February 1945 around the Mauthausen concentration camp. 500 Soviet officers form death block 20 attempt to escape, but only 150 of them actually succeed. Following the tally-ho of the SS, a barbaric manhunt begins. Only very few fugitives survive. With a lot of good luck, the two young officers Michail and Nikolai reach the Karner family's farm. Frau Karner persuades her husband to hide the two escapees.
