Set at the beginning of the Civil War, Tap Roots is all about a county in Mississippi which chooses to secede from the state rather than enter the conflict. The county is protected from the Confederacy by an abolitionist and a Native American gentleman. The abolitionist's daughter is courted by a powerful newspaper publisher when her fiance, a confederate officer, elopes with the girl's sister. The daughter at first resists the publisher's attentions, but turns to him for aid when her ex-fiance plans to capture the seceding county on behalf of the South.

Finally they decide to turn themselves in -- just as they learn that the real crooks have been apprehended.

In this drama an older actress plays her last role. The aging thespian is terribly depressed and ready to kill herself when she finds out that an older more successful friend has vanished. The missing actress's family is in a real quandry. To help them, the other impersonates the older actress. Loose ends are knitted together and then she admits her ruse.

A driver on a non-stop race from New York to San Francisco gets detoured to Hollywood, where he winds up working as a publicity man for a movie studio and assigned to revive the career of a beautiful but fading star.

This fun little piece has Danny Kaye as man who buys a life insurance policy. What the insurance salesman doesn't know is that Danny is on the hit list by assassins so he has to do everything he can to keep him alive or else pay up on the policy.

Naval recruit Elmer is seemingly unable to discharge any of his duties without making life miserable for his irascible commanding officer, who winds up getting doused with paint, splattered with muck, and repeatedly tossed into the water due to Elmer's ineptitude. To make matters worse, Elmer takes a shine to the CO's girlfriend, which prompts her jealous boyfriend into several wrathful chases after Elmer. He eventually has Elmer locked in the brig -- but his girlfriend is in there too, so she can be together with her beloved Elmer.

A family of out-of-work vaudeville performers are finding hard times in the east, so after hearing about the success of a fellow player in Hollywood, they decide to relocate to the movie capitol. Unfortunately, they find themselves equally unemployed there, staying at a n apartment complex filled with similar hopefuls. One day, an offer for an interview at a large studio for the eldest daughter is made, so the father goes on a frantic search, finally locating her at a pool party where he pushes one of the young men in the water, only to find out that the lad was the son of the studio boss.

An oil-rich rube who aspires to stardom is bilked by a phony acting school.
