Known For

Latvia, late 19th century. Farm-hand boy Jancis lives on a homestead with his mother, grandfather and grandmother. His world does not reach beyond the horizon, and life progresses according to the seasonal cycle – from winter through spring, summer and autumn to the next St. George's Day when farmhands often had to move to the next farm.

Suns Funs un vējš

Filmmakers of Riga poetic documentary school, Freimanis and Seleckis, were designated as the creative core for this documentary to be shot in honour of the 25th anniversary of the Soviet Latvia. The team was joined by the heavyweight poet Imants Ziedonis and Herz Frank as script writers. Instead of one of the old, merited, medal rattling ‘combat camera- men’, “Year in Review” is an unusually vivid and unique film for the time. The creative team were awarded the State Prize for the film.

Butterflies

An animation film based on Latvian folk songs, significant due to its artistic style which was far removed from the social realism which was the only accepted form of artistic expression in the Soviet Union at the time, and also due to its undertones related to national identity.
A Sister's Journey

The film, like fragile, sensual, philosophical poetry, evokes the youth of the Poet (Imants Ziedonis) and Auķa (the actress Ausma Kantāne-Ziedone was called Imants), when poetic words in letters and postcards were the lifeline for another person. In his letters, the Poet writes about the cultural figures with whom he travels to distant lands, his observations about places where ordinary people of that time could rarely travel – even to Bulgaria and Poland, as well as Sakhalin. The poet's observations about the people he met in foreign lands, as well as about parties, cafes, and girls, are amusing. In the letters, just like in Imants Ziedonis' poetry, there is their longing for a strong family filled with children, understanding, personality development, as well as contrasts and reflections on their great talents, and how close they are to each other even when they have reached creative heights.
Dzejnieks un Auķis

Film dedicated to Latvian refugees scattered around the world by World War II.
