The life story of Franciszek Murka, a municipal official. He is dismissed from his job as a result of unfounded slander about his alleged left-wing political past. After losing his government job, he assumes the identity of a foreigner named Franz Klamm and makes a career for himself in the aristocratic salons of Warsaw as a master of the occult.

Follows the lives of people shortly after World War 2 as they try to adjust to their new lives. Completed in 1946, it was banned from release by the communist government of Poland until 1957 in edited form.

Two children are born in a rich family's manor house - one of them, Gogo, is a son of a countess and the second one, Maciek, a son of the servant. The servant decides to switch the babies so her son can have a better life. They both grow up and fall for the same woman, a girl named Kasia raised by the countess.

Bielecki becomes determined to become a famous writer, but the means he employs in achieving his goal are far from ethical. Bielecki discourages his friend Jerzy Gorski by telling him his new work is rather poor, driving him into despair. But Bielecki is such a good friend that he even provides Gorski with the morphine so he can overdose too. With Gorski out of the way, Bielecki can now peddle his friend's book as his own. However, it doesn't take long for Bielecki's evil ways to catch up to him.

She quickly decides to take the job, and a music teacher tries to win her favor, but the girl is more interested in a car mechanic she met briefly. A Polish silent film from 1922, it was the first adaptation of Stefan Żeromski's 1912 novel "The Faithful River." The film's central theme is the love story of Prince Odrowąż, a wounded insurgent, and Salomea, and the fateful intervention of the prince's mother. The plot is complemented by allegorical tableaux vivants by Artur Grottger from the "Polonia" and "Lithuania" series. The final scene depicts a group of veterans of the January Uprising in independent Poland.
