Biography

Saratchandra Chatterjee, also known as Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, was a Bengali novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century. Most of his works deal with the lifestyle, tragedy, and struggle of the village people and the contemporary socio-cultural practices that prevailed in Bengal. He remains the most popular, translated, and adapted Indian author of all time. His works have been adapted in around fifty films in different South Asian languages. Particularly, his novel 'Devdas' (1917) has been adapted in sixteen different cinematic versions in languages including Bengali, Hindi, and Telugu. His novel 'Parineeta' (1914) has also been adapted thrice as Hindi language films. Things got worse by the arrival of Kadambini's orphaned school-going step-brother, Kishan, who is beaten and abused by not only by Kadambini and Navinchandra, but also by their overweight son. When Hemangini objects to Kishan's ill-treatment, Bipin takes the side of the rest of the family, and may probably force her to abandon Kishan to his fate or divorce her.
