Living together in a workers' dorm, Katerina and her friends are determined to make it in Moscow. In a remote Siberian village, a work injury sends Vasily Kuziakin on a paid trip to a Black Sea resort as compensation. There, he meets femme fatale Raisa Zaharovna and decides to stay with her. Such is the beginning of a new life for him, exciting and strange, but lacking his home, his wife and children, and his pigeons.

The story follows Maria Konovalova who travels from her rural village to visit her daughter Nina in the city. Interestingly, Родня (Rodnya) in Russian sounds very similar to the word Родина (Rodina), which means "Motherland." The film features three generations of women — Maria, her daughter Nina, and her granddaughter Irina — symbolizing three different Russias: one from the past, one modern, and one representing the future.

Filipp was taken into the army, on the border where Filipp serves, an armed violation of the border occurs, during which he dies.

A young romantic loves step dance but there is only one person who knows this forgotten art. Beglov was a step dance super star back in 50s but as step became unpopular he lost everything. He hates even this word - 'chechotka' (step dance). But somehow the young man convinces him to become his coach and manager.

USSR, late 80's. Kozhemyakin, the former deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers, comes to Yalta for a vacation. Irina, who works as a van driver, is asked to meet him at the station. Accidental resort acquaintance unexpectedly grew into something more. Neither the difference in age, nor in social status did not become an obstacle. Irina agrees to become Kozhemyakin's wife and moves to Moscow.
