An idle work crew is ordered to go and heat up an abandoned house before it is demolished. A road sign pointing in the wrong direction leads them astray, and the men end up at an empty hotel, where they begin a program of evening entertainment led by Severi Suhonen.
Kaarina, an orphan girl raised by Taneli, the innkeeper, notices that her friendship with her childhood friend Antti is turning into romance. Henrik, the patron, also has his eye on Kaarina.
Aging professor of mathematics completes his life's work, a research project that has taken him decades, and climbs up from the boiler room (his study) and back to real life. He can hardly recognize his rebellious teenage kids and materialistic wife who hardly seem to notice his existence. The only person who is interested in the professor's work is Marja, his son's girlfriend and freshman at the university. An innocent infatuation flares up between the old man and the young girl, while the professor's family is only interested in the prize money awarded to the professor by an international jury for his academic achievements.
Pirkko Mannola and Esko Salminen play young pop stars of the same name, who develop a secret romance that is kept hidden from the other musicians in the pop orchestra. Traveler Severi travels to Helsinki to enjoy some culture, where he meets Sinikka and Simo, who run a buying and selling business. At a customs auction, he buys a painting that businessman Kehveli and his assistants also have their eyes on.
The story is set in Helsinki's revue theater Punainen Mylly, run by Jalmari Haapala with Erkki Pajula as its lead singer. Between performances, dancer Kaarina and doctor Kalle are offered the chance for romance, despite some misunderstandings.

Eemeli leaves the countryside for Helsinki to obtain tax money for the bailiff who is pursuing him. In the capital, he becomes the assistant driver of Andersson, a cab driver. One night while driving, Eemeli meets Vesa and his little sister Jaana, whom Andersson and his granddaughter Katriina take into their family as foster children.
Trade counselor Lillukka leaves his entire fortune to Pekka Puupää, who, thanks to cartoons and films, has become closer to him than his immediate family, who are pursuing their own interests.
