The action takes place from April to December 1986. The KGB department of the USSR becomes aware of the interest shown by foreign intelligence services in the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. To establish the whereabouts of an experienced CIA officer, Albert Lenz, who is suspected of espionage, on the territory of Pripyat, Lieutenant Colonel of military counterintelligence Andrey Nikolaev arrives in the city.

This is a story about three friends who find themselves in the maiden kingdom - in the philological faculty. The protagonist, Misha Solomonov, is naive, romantic and responsive, he writes poetry, does not know how to say no, and is hopelessly in love with classmate Lena. His best friends are the gloomy botanist Roma Babin, who is not interested in the opposite sex and whose main hobby is online games, and his complete opposite, unsuccessfully dreaming about sex, wit, Zhenya Morozov, whose ridiculous appearance and peculiar humor do not help him in any way to win over the girls. Misha's rival is Lena's ex-boyfriend from the Faculty of Physical Education Boria, who from all the literature recognizes only Sport-Express

The czar of Russia has died and a power vacuum has developed. This period in the late 16th and early 17th century has been called "The Time of Troubles." There are many impostors who claim to the right to rule, but there's only one heir, the Czarina Kseniya Godunova. She has married a Polish military leader who wants to claim the Russian throne in her name so he can rule all of Russia. As the Poles move in on Moscow in an attempt to install the czarina on the throne, Andrei, a serf with a life-long infatuation of the czarina attempts to save her from her brutal Polish husband.

Exploring the school’s abandoned wing, the teenagers discover a mirror covered in mysterious drawings. Facing it, they playfully recite an incantation which renders their innermost desires a reality - at the expense of nothing less than their souls.

A famous massage therapist becomes the prime suspect in the disappearance of several of his clients. All the missing women are young girls looking to get away from of the provincial town to live their life in the capital, become professional models, or simply become high maintenance trophy wives.

In a reserved seat carriage of the Chelyabinsk-Moscow train, forty-year-old Gena and twenty-five-year-old Sanek, a young film director, meet. Gena is going to visit his dying grandmother in his native wilderness, and Sanek is going to the premiere of his film. Gena tricks Sanek into getting off the train with him. Hundreds of kilometers from Moscow, they spend an eventful day and a half until the next train. Gena introduces Sanek to the whole cross-section of his life: the history of his family, love, friendship. Thus, experiencing all the troubles together, Sanek and Gena become true friends. This chance meeting becomes fateful for Sanek, changes his worldview and determines the theme of his future film.

Todorovsky's film examines life in a provincial Russian town (that is too small to even appear on the map) just outside of Stalingrad during the famous WWII Battle. This is NOT a traditional war film, and the epic events of the battle take place almost entirely off screen. Instead, Todorovsky outlines a crude love triangle between three young people caught up in the harsh Russian winter. The stark winter settings, and the characters' struggle for survival, are what make this film one worth watching.
