Near the end of World War II, Gen. Dietrich von Choltitz receives orders to burn down Paris if it becomes clear the Allies are going to invade, or if he cannot maintain control of the city. After much contemplation Choltitz decides to ignore his orders, enraging the Germans and giving hope to various resistance factions that the city will be liberated. Choltitz, along with Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling, helps a resistance leader organize his forces.

Among the six suspects is Bernard Vauquier, the son of the President of the Senate. The investigation proves to be as complicated as it is sensitive. But who murdered or killed Candice Strasberg? The young and charming Mandoline, accountant of the advertising agency Publi-Pub, has stolen documents proving that the company kept double accounts. Remorseful when she wanted to pass this evidence to a tax inspector, she decides to put the documents back in the agency's safe, but does not really know how to go about it.
