Ryōmaden is the 49th NHK Taiga drama. It was shown on NHK from January 3 to November 28, 2010 spanning 48 episodes. The story centers on the life of 19th-century Japanese historical figures Iwasaki Yatarō and Sakamoto Ryōma. It has been announced that the series will be aired in several other countries, for example Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

This was the first taiga drama to concentrate on the lives of commoners and the reviled merchant class of the Tokugawa period. He meets informant John (Lee Byung-Hun) who gives details on security arrangements and former diplomat Takeshi Shimomura (Teruyuki Kagawa) who worked with Kuroda at the Mexican Embassy 11 years ago.With the help of the information received from John, diplomat Kosaku Koroda is able to prevent an attack on Shoko Mikami by extremists, but as he investigates how the attacker knew of Mikami's movements, Takeshi Shimomura jumps off a building to his death.Meanwhile, a suspect emerges in the murder of a university professor in Japan that took place recently.

The NPS (Nationai Police Safetyrescue) was formed to combat extreme crimes like terrorism, which is beyond the scope of the ordinary police force. Their purpose is to catch criminals alive. The elite members in the police organization formed NPS to strengthen the authority of SAT (Special Assault Team). When the NPS cannot solve a crime then they send in SAT. When SAT succeeds their authority strengthens. Ichigo (Osamu Mukai) is a member of NPS. He is a former boxer, but became a police officer at the age of 23. In his second year as a police officer, he was scouted by the NPS. His strength is hand to hand combat at close range. He is also blunt with strangers. Iori (Gou Ayano) is a member of SAT. He is the best shooter in the group and possesses a calm and steady personality. Ichigo and Iori, with their different personalities, find themselves having constant conflicts.

Sakazaki Iwane is a ronin who spends idle days in Edo. Until a few months ago, he was a promising son and successor to a powerful family in Bungo. He has came back to Edo, where he lived for a while for swordplay training with his two best friends, after a tragedy in the three's home domain—both of the two friends died, one of them killed by Iwane by command of the domain lord's chief retainer. Iwane left his home for Edo, leaving behind his fiancée, a sister of the friend he killed. Eventually, Iwane detects the conspiracy behind the deaths of the two friends and struggles to reform his domain.

Sanada is over the age limit as he could not achieve 4-dan by the age of 26, and is now trying to take an exam for admission to 3-dan. Akiba supports Sanada's attempt to become a professional shogi player and becomes interested in the game.

This is the story of "The Forty-Seven Ronin." Based on historical events in 1701-2, the movie tells the tale of the Asano clan's downfall and the revenge of its former samurai on the perpetrator of the catastrophe. Lord Asano was goaded, or tricked, into drawing his sword inside the Shogun's palace -- a crime which carried the death penalty. The newly installed Shogun was furious at Asano and ordered all his clan's assets seized, meaning some 20,000 samurai and commoners were unemployed and landless at a stroke. Forty-seven of these ronin (masterless samurai) banded together to take attempt revenge on Lord Kira, who had goaded Asano into drawing his sword.
