In December 1917, a Finnish delegation arrives in St. Petersburg to meet Vladimir Lenin to seek recognition of Finland's independence.

It is the summer of 1941. An eastern-Finnish machine gun company receives an order to turn in their surplus equipment. The company is transferred to the front lines. The next morning the soldiers wake to the sound of guns – the war has begun.

The Finnish coast guard battles the bootleggers who smuggle booze across the Gulf of Finland during the prohibition law.

Elmeri Vara from the General Stabilization Party, Selma Vuorinen from the Free Enlightenment Party, and Irja Solanen from the Independent Women's Party are competing for seats in parliament. When young Pertti and his classmates start a campaign with caricatures against Vara and Vuorinen, whom they consider unfit, Principal Reino has to decide whether to support the parliamentary candidates or his students, and how he feels about the candidacy of his beloved Irja.

Old Virtanen is a respected night watchman at a textile factory and a single father to his daughter Aino, who is about to graduate from high school. In this comedy set in Helsinki in 1940, laid-off office girls Sirkku, Irkku, and Mirkku forget their everyday worries in the company of cheerful musicians Vallen, Jalle, and Nalle.
