Nhài is born into a poor Confucian family, and through her family's arrangement, she is married into the wealthy Vu family. The film tells the scary, haunting adventures of three medical university students who accidentally discover a species of wormwood that is made with human blood in an ancient wooden box containing a piece of withered tree and amulet. He placed it deep in a messy bookshelf in Professor Hoan Sinh's house. That is wormwood blood, a secret medicine of the Sang La people.

Boi leads an isolated life on a mountain with his unwed daughter and his mentally disabled son Maize. Feeling death approach, he becomes obsessed with the continuation of the family line and he resolves to find his son a wife. After numerous intense but failed attempts to buy a woman for Maize, the father is driven to increasingly insane acts...

The film opens with the death of a mother. Although her heartbeat stops, her consciousness continues worrying about her son and blessing him. Her neighbour digs a grave near the house in the field for her, but the son insists on cremation. Because he does not receive much in the way of inheritance, he must be careful budgeting the funeral. Another man is killed by an accident at a construction site. His wife suddenly becomes widowed, but decides to go to her husband’s hometown to bury him and comfort his soul. His relatives, however, doubt her sincerity, as she is still young and beautiful.
