Wang Chen-Ho

Bumbling Hong Kong detectives Lui (Kenny Bee) and Leung (Tony Leung Ka-Fai) go undercover in an apartment complex to keep watch over Pearl Chan (Carina Lau), a high school teacher who is suspected to be connected to a rare diamond theft involving a notorious thief named Mr. Mickey (Simon Yam). Meanwhile, the legendary Black Rose (Veronica Yip) appears and is also in pursuance of Mr. Mickey, wanting him to surrender himself and the diamond in order to clear her name.

A rural youth, Lin, works as a janitor at an airline in Taipei while attending night school to learn English. He shares a flat with Guo, who makes a fortune catering to Japanese clients. To fund his brother's wedding, Lin borrows from his company. When his father urgently arrives in Taipei seeking money, can Lin resolve his father's concerns? The narrative critiques society's infatuation with foreign ideals and exposes the darker sides of human nature.

During the Vietnam War, the US military planned to send soldiers to Hualien for vacation. The owners of three brothels in Hualien jointly rented a large house, preparing to open a bar to make a lot of money, and invited teachers from school to teach the bar girls to speak English. Dozens of prostitutes were carefully selected, even Afen, the mistress of the brothel owner, was recruited. The teachers began to teach the girls how to speak English, mix cocktails, and even taught them how to wear condoms when receiving American soldiers to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
