Biography

A matchless finisher. The Mexican has been one of the best strikers in the history of Real Madrid. He was the perfect spearhead of that team captained by the Quinta del Buitre. He lived one of the golden eras of our club and the fans still remember his acrobatic finishes and his somersaults in every celebration. He arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu from Atlético de Madrid. Hugo arrived, he saw and he won. His first season as a madridista ended with the league title, in which he was top scorer with 22 goals, and the UEFA Cup. It was only the beginning of a long list of successes. Thanks, among other things, to the effectiveness of the Mexican, Madrid won five consecutive league titles. Dominating domestic soccer, he reached two European Cup semifinals. If things went very well for him as a team, the same happened in the individual category. Hugo won four Pichichi Trophies and a Golden Shoe with the white shirt to close a glorious period. Voted Best North and Central American Footballer of the 20th century by the IFFHS, he was capped 75 times by Mexico. He played in three World Cups (Argentina, Mexico and USA) and one Copa América, in 1993, where he was runner-up. As in Madrid, Hugo Sánchez is a legend in his country. This DVD examines the multiple points of cultural contact between the United States and Mexico. From the Santa Barbara Fiestas and South Carolina's kitschy "South of the Border" tourist complex, to a Mexican Beatles cover band and Chicano rap, this film reveals the borderlands as a laboratory of hybridity that continues to ignite the popular imagination of each nation. Working at the boundaries of experimental film and documentary travelogue, this film weaves together found footage, interviews, performance art, and music video, producing a masterful commentary that is at once poetic, disturbing and hilarious. Includes appearances by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Aztlán Underground, among others.
