The story centers on the Roman merchant Piacchi, who raises the foundling Nicolo after the death of his son and bequeaths all his possessions to the young man. However, the adopted son turns against Piacchi and his wife.

In the summer of 1967, journalist Katharina is visited in Munich by her French friend Anne. They take day trips and visit cafés, acquaintances, and parties. In a series of conversations between them and other women, they talk about the chances for female emancipation in a male-dominated society.

In twelve short episodes, which are interwoven into the course of a day, the film depicts situations that arise from keeping and caring for two cats for a family with six children in a suburban home. In addition to aspects of animal care, the film also addresses social problems and conflicts that arise from dealing with the animals in this family.
