March 1944. At the front, the Red Army is conducting a confident offensive. The Allies are about to open a second front, and it seems that the final defeat of Nazi Germany is very close. However, the joy of the coming victory is overshadowed by a series of daring and brutal murders. No one has ever managed to see the bandits up close. According to the scant testimony of random eyewitnesses, the composition of the attackers is constantly changing. And every time they leave portraits of the dead at the crime scene. For these drawings and cruelty, the gang was nicknamed "Death's Head", and its leader was called an Artist.

Retired Major Cherkasov helps former colleagues at MOORE to investigate the murders of lottery participants who won a large sum of money. Kovalev and Timofeeva believe that the organizer of the prank, Belousov, and the presenter, Shorokhov, are behind the murders. Gradually unwinding the case, MOORE's staff is facing resistance from officials for whom the lottery is an important budget item. Terror strikes the underground train system in Moscow in the form of a flood from a collapsed tunnel. The film follows a diverse group of Moscow citizens who find themselves trapped in the city’s underground rail network, their train derailed and virtually crushed after an aging tunnel collapses. Amongst this band of survivors is softly spoken surgeon Andrey (Sergei Puskepalis), whose wife is having an affair with the conceited businessman Vlad (Anatoly Beliy). Fate brings these two men together on the same doomed train, but there is little time to resolve their differences, as the tunnel begins to quickly fill with water, forcing them to work together with the others and find a way back to the surface.

Timofey Nazarov, the head of the colony in the remote taiga, still dreams of escaping to the capital — and is betting on cinema again. But Nikolai Videnin was released, and now Nazarov is transferring a new prisoner to his colony — the famous Moscow director Matvey Selyuzhitsky, who gets the nickname "Motor" and begins to reshoot iconic Hollywood action films.

The final part of Mikhalkov's trilogy about Divisional Commander Kotov finds him returning home during World War II having been betrayed, narrowly escaped execution for treason and nearly reduced to dust in a prison camp.
