Border Inspector Reitlechner fights in vain against a stubborn gang of smugglers led by the pretty innkeeper Retta. When a colleague is shot during an operation, suspicion falls on Reitlechner.

Eva Örn is a newly graduated teacher, who becomes a school teacher in rural Vikarlunda. She is a beautiful young woman with firm opinions and she does not live up to the locals' picture of the ideal female teacher. She has an affair with the pastor, Ingvar Hagson, but they have to keep their love a secret.

In a small town anonymous letters are delivered to five different families. The letters are signed "Veritas" (Truth). They tell of a series of events and conditions that the recipients thought was forgotten and buried long ago.

Set in the Stockholm archipelago, where a man nicknamed ”Kometen” ("The Comet") runs a very successfull business of liquor smuggling, while the customs service and police try their best to stop him.
