Merry Fellows was the first Soviet musical comedy. Set in Odessa and Moscow in the 1930s. Shepherd Kostya Potekhin is mistaken for an international concert star. He falls in love with Anyuta and plays the "star" for her. In a cascade of comic musical numbers he becomes the leader of a Jazz-Band and gives a hilarious show at the Odessa Music Hall. Now he is destined to perform at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Lida Baburova, a tour guide of an architectural museum, unexpectedly receives a warrant for a two-room apartment in the new district of Zarechye, among the new settlers called "our Cheryomushki". Lida and her father go to inspect the apartment, but it turns out that it doesn't exist. The manager of the house, Barabashkin, conducted fictitious documentation, and the Baburovs' apartment merged with the neighboring one, owned by the head of the construction trust Drebednyov.

Summer 1947. The World War II has just died down. Unexpectedly and incognito a stranger shows up in a small village in Transcarpathia, situated near the very frontier. For some purpose he gets into a well in an oldmans Atanas yard, and when Atanas comes out, it turns out that he is not a stranger, he is Bogdan Susik (Ye.Vesnik), a former butler of a local count. He tries to understand why a former butler got into a well, and reveals a terrible secret to Atanas, on the honor to keep silence and assist him in everything. The fact is that when in 1944 the counter escaped overseas, Susik helped him to hide a chest. He is sure that the counters riches were hidden inside of the chest, and that the map with the chest location was put in the well. Now they have to find it

The heroine of this story is a simple girl from Odesa named Tonya Chumakova who dreams of the sea. And so she is hired as a radio operator on one of the ships of the Black Sea whaling fleet...

The comedy is based on the ancient legend of Tahir and Zuhr. The action has been transferred to our time. Various obstacles stand in the way of lovers, but in the end, despite all the machinations of others, Tahir and Zuhra find their happiness.
